Assertive Mentoring

Here at Greystoke Primary School, we follow an assessment system called ‘Assertive Mentoring’.

The Aims of Assertive Mentoring are:
to raise standards for all
to motivate and involve children in their learning
to inform and involve parents in their child’s learning

Assertive Mentoring brings together a whole series of initiatives and policies we already had at Greystoke Primary School, then goes that extra step to improve them! It is about shining the light on the positive!

Assertive Mentoring targets what a child can do, and what they need to do to move to make progress. It reflects a higher degree of challenge introduced by the National Curriculum and allows teachers and children to set achievable targets in reading, writing and mathematics each half term.  The system facilitates sharing these targets with parents so that you can help your child to achieve even more quickly. 

Children know exactly what they need to learn in order to make progress. 

Assertive mentoring is based on a colour coding system:

Green means that the child has met expectations in attainment, attitude, achievement and behaviour. 

Yellow means that the child has nearly met expectations for learning. 

Red means that the child needs further support with meeting their targets in attainment, attitude and/or behaviour. 

The advantages of the system:

• Quick and easy to use and understand.
• All staff in school use the same approach.
• Children judge their own learning and behaviour: they are startlingly accurate.
• Children are empowered to take ownership and control of the way they behave and their attitude to learning.
• Children who have a good attitude to learning and school life are praised.

We measure and record children’s attitude to school life, and set targets for improvement if they are needed.  Many aspects of our routine come under this heading, for example wearing of correct uniform, bringing in to school PE kit, attendance and punctuality.

Each child has an Assertive Mentoring file. In children's individual mentoring files, there is all the information the staff, children and yourselves need to be aware of (in relation to academic achievement, attitude and behaviour.) 

Mentoring files will be the focus of one-to-one meetings.  During each  term, your child will meet with their mentor and each half term, after receiving your half term report , parents are also invited to meet teaching staff to share any concerns or areas of development you would like to discuss as well as relating how your child is progressing at school.

All targets are set and shared in collaboration with children and parents.
